Christian Book Marketing - Facebook, Twitter

We see it daily. Christian books on Amazon with no sales rank which means no book sales. I've always been amazed when seeing books published by top Christian self publishing companies that have no sales rank on Amazon. In following many of these books, months and months go by and the sales rank either never appears or slowly fades into terrible sales rank numbers.

Back some month ago, I took the time to perform a search using the names of some of the industries most popular Christian book publishers that offered various packages for self publishing and a very large percentage of the books published either had no sales rank on Amazon or the numbers were very high. Remember, the lower the sales rank number, the more book sales.

Recently I was contacted by an author who shared that their publisher wanted to sell them a social media packages. I thought, well that's a good idea. Then the author went on to share that the package included setting up a facebook and twitter page, but that was basically it.

While facebook and twitter are awesome platforms that each have endless millions of users. For an author, paying someone to create a facebook or twitter account is not the answer to book sales. It is a very small portion of what an author should have as a marketing plan. Why?

Well for one anyone can open a facebook or twitter page. You don't need your publisher to do that for you.  In fact it is quite easy to open the a facebook or twitter account, get your pages set up and get the ball rolling. The hard part which can takes literally years is creating a following.

But facebook and twitter have millions of follower and users, you might say. Yes, that is true, however, that doesn't mean that the same millions of users will see, find or follow your page just because you have one. Further to get people to follow your facebook or twitter page requires endless hours of interaction on your part. Connecting with other users on both sites requires doing just that, making connections which takes hours each day and is a very long and slow process.

We have a saying when it comes to Christian Book Marketing. Don't go fishing with one or two poles in the water. You need to go into deeper waters and use a net to catch fish and while both of these platforms are awesome social media platforms. Depending upon them to sell books will prove to be a very slow process.
